In this module we are to look into the university sector an design a digital product for any users of our choice. Through research and empathising I will be able to define (make a problem statement) for this project and hence come up with a demographic for this product. This module places a huge emphasis on research; that is the first stage of the design thinking process.
We have been put in groups and we’ve been assigned to do some research into the university sector. The first area that I’ve chosen to conduct my research on is the innovative technology that is already incorporated in colleges, universities, and further education.
Jisc is a UK based non-profit organization that provides digital solutions and infrastructure for higher education, further education, and research institutions. Their main focus is to enhance the digital transformation of education through technology, data, and innovation.
Areas they focus on:
Cloud - through their partnerships with AWS (Amazon Website Services) and Microsoft, and other services they can ensure their users a good deal on cloud services which I know is something crucial when it comes to the education sector. There is a lot of information and work that is stored in cloud services and Jisc ensure a good and safe deal thanks to their M365 security.
Janet Network - A resilient high-speed network connecting universities, colleges, and research institutions across the UK. EdTech - Short for Educational Technology; is used to improve learning and education management. Olly Newton; the executive director at the Edge Foundation says that Ai has the potential to change the assessment process due to the traditional methods having being criticised for their limitations.
Data Analytics - This allows tutors to track students’ progress. This allows them to know who needs more support. All this information is displayed in one place and is translated into an intuitive user-interface. It also provides students with their learning and engagement; the check-in feature allows one on one support from tutors
Jisc's research on AI, digital learning, and student engagement could help shape my ideas.
I found this website quite insightful; they give 39 examples of the use of AI in the education sector:
This one reminds me of the SDG project I did in the 1st semester. It’s a gaming app that teaches and raises awareness about the SDG14 which is life below sea.
Accommodation: University halls of residence, private student accommodations, or shared houses. Costs vary depending on the city and type of accommodation.
Independent Study: Emphasis is placed on self-directed learning, requiring students to manage their time effectively. I would say this goes the same for all higher educations across the world
Academic Support: Universities offer resources such as writing centres, libraries, and study workshops to assist with academic development. Clubs and Societies: A wide range of student-run groups cater to diverse interests, providing opportunities to meet new people and engage in activities.
Part-Time Employment: Students may have the opportunity to work part-time during their studies depending on their schedule, and or visa regulations. This can provide more income and work experience.
