In today's class, we uncovered the pros and cons of AI, how it is used and how it is impacting the education sector and the populations self-esteem. It is also deceiving a lot of people with the use of deepfakes. It is affecting politicians and deceiving the general public. Despite the confusion that it's set in, it has been proven to be very helpful in many ways. As a matter of fact, there is a city in Japan that uses AI to help run the government.
Yokosuka, a city in Japan's Kanagawa Prefecture, has integrated artificial intelligence into its municipal operations. In April 2023, Yokosuka began trailing Open AI's ChatGPT to assist with administrative tasks, aiming to enhance efficiency and reduce the workload on civil servants.

This is the future, and according to most experts, AI really took off in the late 2000s and early 2010s, but these were mainly used in businesses and social media but as of lately you can see it being pushed into the general population; it's seen being used by mostly students and this is something that a lot of tutors struggle with, but thanks to AI again, there are also AI detectors that help detect other AI. Something that is feared is that artists will lose their jobs or lose the motivations to push themselves in the career because AI may overtake them in their specialties. This is even seen in the art world. There are rich people out there buying art made by AI.
Council Post: AI And The Future Of Work
I decided to look into how AI is affecting the design industry and this article from MOCK I discovered was very helpful. Even though the article is talking about Graphic Design, I feel as though it can be applied to everyone in the design industry. It was an interesting read.
AI tools are getting more faster when it comes to performing repetitive tasks like idea generations; they are getting really good at generating logos, designs, and even entire websites by analysing trends, colours, and layouts. This helps designers save a tremendous amount of time when it comes to resizing or creating multiple copies of a design for different platforms.
Despite all this, AI cannot replace the human qualities designers offers and this is due to its lack of empathy and emotions. Design involves storytelling, qualitative research, and these things evoke emotions that allow designers to feel connected to their target audience hence allowing them to create the perfect design. AI could never mimic this.
During my research I also uncovered that AI is a very helpful tool and shouldn't be feared by designers, but rather it should be seen as a tool that can be used to make design processes easy by making AI handle the tedious work. This will help designers focus on the big tasks like design development, feedback, iterations, etc,
The article finally highlights that designers will always be an essential element in the design industry, and as these AI tools evolve so will designers. By understanding the capabilities of AI, designers who are willing to embrace this new technology will benefit from it a lot because they will be able to use to to enhance their work.
Todays class brought my awareness to the dangers and benefits of AI, I understand why some might be fearful but AI tools have a lot of capabilities that could make our jobs easy if we use it wisely. I know for a fact that AI can never overrule designers in the design industry and this is due to their lack of the unique qualities human designers bring to the table.
