This week we covered the core principles in design which was all about the placement and ratio aspects of images and texts, we learned about the Fibonacci sequence which in the design world is known as the golden ratio, after that we moved onto learning about the rule of thirds.

The Golden ration is nature’s mathematical ratio which is something i find quite fascinating, I’m a Christian hence learning about the golden rule also made me realise of much precision God took into designing this world we live in, the golden ratio can be used to create organic and aesthetically pleasing compositions in artwork or design projects; it’s a very useful thing that allows designers to place things properly so they can be easily captivated by viewers.

Since it’s all mathematical there are numbers to it of course, and the figures that are used when measuring the golden ratio are 1/1/2/3/5/8/13/21/34/55/89…, this is done by adding a figure to the previous one and so on, for example 3+2=5 and 5+3=8 and so on.

Another thing we covered was the rule of thirds, which is a principle mainly used in photography. I am quite familiar with the rule of thirds because it was covered when I studied Level 3 Graphic Design. The rule implies that the human eyes will focus on the parts of the photo where the 4 imaginary lines intersect. Personally, I don't really rely on the rule of thirds because when I look at an image, I automatically look at what stands out the most. But maybe that's just me. The rule is used for creating pleasing aesthetics and balance in images.

The Gestalt principle is the foundation on visual designers and this principle describes how we see things, it’s the ability for our brains to generate forms and what I took from this lesson is that sometimes we don’t to fully complete tings we can jus place them in a certain way, and since the human brain will fill in the gaps because the mind is constantly trying to make sense of things. The Gestalt rule that I like the most are emergence, this is when an image is visible just by looking at a few shapes that are in close proximity to each other

A- I would classify this image as a continuity

B- This image of the Dalmatian was made using the closure principle, you could also call it the emergence since the image of the dog just emerges out of the pile of black dots on the screen

C- This is a very good example of figure and ground, and in this case we can see the figure of a gorilla and a lion’s head due to how the tree bark’s been shaped and designed

D- In this image we can observe the law of similarity, the similarity of the trees shows us that they’re related
