In week 7 the dashboard project was introduced to the class and after seeing what previous alumni did last year I got really excited to start with this project, it looked very challenging and since my figma skills had improved I felt very confident that my final product would be something that I’d be very proud of. We were then tasked to do some apprentice work on which we had to digitally redraw some data dashboards, I chose a few dashboards and redrew them and commented on how easy, difficult, and or fun it was.
We aslo uncovered different types of data charts and what the benefits are of using them in our dashboard. In order to display some relevant information on my life in a week dashboard I’ll be studying some of the data charts that I want to implement. Today’s lecture was quite interesting as I got to see some data charts that I’d never seen or heard of before, like the “**The Relationship Between Health Spending and Life Expectancy”** graph andsome other fascinating charts.
Nicholas Feltron
Nicholas Felton, born in 1979 and raised in Pennsylvania, is a designer known for his unique annual personal reports. He started this journey of creating these reports in 2005, and they have become an outstanding part of his work. These reports serve as a clear visualization of the personal data he gathers throughout the year, summarising various aspects of his life such as travel, social interactions, and media consumption.
What makes Felton's work particularly intriguing is how he makes such complex data visually engaging and readable. Despite the complexity and detail in his reports, he manages to lay out the information in a coherent and orderly manner, preventing any potential confusion.
Another feature of Felton's work is his typographical choices. His data visualization charts are not only impressive due to their content but also because of the typography used. Felton expresses an eruditeness in pairing the right typeface with his charts, showing a deep understanding of type personality. This is a skill I greatly admire in his work.
Another thing I noticed is that the large numbers and names on his charts are large in size, this helps draw viewers in, piquing your curiosity to dive deeper into what the infographics are about. Each chart is carefully created to captivate the reader's attention, encouraging them to explore the well detailed data.
In his work, Nicholas Felton has managed to turn everyday personal data into fascinating and visually appealing information, showcasing his unique skills in data visualization and design.
James Round
Another graphic designer and illustrator I took it upon myself to research is James Round, after seeing some of beautiful illustrative. James takes advantage of his illustrative skills, as seen in the images below he incorporates illustrations with a nice colour palette to conjure compelling data visualizations and bold illustrations that engage and make viewers pay attention to the data being displayed. I am fond of his work, his data visualisations are very clear and they have a playful manner to them. James makes complex data clear and attractive with his illustration skills and excellent use of colour.
