During this week there was no lecture, we all got feedback from our tutor during this lecture. After my lecture reviewed my banking app he made it known to me that the use of the patterns in the background of the screens were too distracting as they would move with each interaction. I proceeded to take this feedback on board and made some pages to my banking app. I removed the patterns from most backgrounds that had a lot of information on them. I was also advised to make the letters on the screens smaller, I took this on board and made all the texts 12 points and the text in the nav bar 12 points, the headings on each screen was reduced to 32 points. After removing all the patterns form the backgrounds I started to see things clearer than before. Another feedback I received was that I could utilise my space better by creating a scroll through section on my payments screens, I was also told that things were meant to be in order, as in the card that the user is sending from should be a the top and the account/card they’re sending the funds to should be at the bottom, of course all this was taken on board and I proceeded to make all these new improvements to the app
This week we had a guest speaker who gave a presentation on his career so far, Ronan talked about how he started as a freelancer to working with multi-billion companies, some start-ups grew to to be successful and some never made it out of the office but nevertheless he seems to be appreciative and proud of all the opportunities he’s had so far. Ronan also gave us some insights gave us some insights on what it is like to work with big companies and small companies, big companies make you a small part of them and it is harder to reach creative directors and senior designers whereas in a small company it is easy to reach them. His whole speech was to give us an idea of “What kind of designer?” we wan to be, it okay to be scared because everyone in the industry has imposter syndrome and it is important to share your work with your peers to get feedbacks and encouragements. The talk gave me a good insight on what to expect and do, I’ve learned having a good portfolio attracts a lot of eyes, and this will be very important for my second year as I’ll be doing placement in the 3rd year.
After his speech Ronan went around the class to speak to each individual. I showed him the projects that I was working on and he said my work looked really good with nice colours and animation, he then said that the animations were excessive and that is something he too did early in his career, Ronan told me not to fall into the rabbit hole, but to keep things simple, functional and not too distracting. He also told me to try and eliminate some of the lines on some of the screens but it would be okay to keep them on the Apple ID screens
I took Ronan’s feedback on board and removed the pattern from all the screens besides the Apple ID screens. He then told me that it would look really good if I implemented some patterns up above the screen where the camera island is on the screen as it’s an empty space. I went ahead and added the same pattern to majority of the screens
