We were tasked to pick out typefaces out of a hat and I got a typeface called Domaine, this was the first time I had ever heard of Domaine, and each of us were tasked to create a user persona based on the typeface we got, as our tutor explained the task to us I got a bit excited cuz I found the whole thing a bit amusing. I proceeded to do my search on this typeface which had now become known to me, I quite enjoyed learning about it and this is what I learned about the Domaine typeface:

After picking a random typeface from a hat, I took my time to learn more about this newfound font, Domaine was created by Kris Sowersby and distributed by Klim Type Foundry in 2013, it’s an independent typeface design studio led by Kris Sowersby and this design studio based in Wellington, New Zealand. The serif type specimen comes in 12 variable styles which concludes at a generous 46 styles.

Domaine is a sharp and elegant serif that blends traditional French and British genres, its curvaceous Latin detailing makes the letters stand out. The birth of Domaine typeface family started with Hardys’ logotype and typeface which was rebranded by Kris when Parallax, a design consultancy in Adelaide, Australia, approached Kris, back in 2007, they wanted him to draw a logotype and typeface for the wine company that was established in 1853.

The main style that Kris had to reference from were bracketed Latin serif typefaces. The aim was to recreate a logotype that would make Hardys appear as a premium wine brand, but the Latin typeface designs were too sharp and chaotic, so in order to tame the bracketed serifs, Kris edited out anything overly flowery, and those little touches gave Domaine the power of making words look elegant and appealing, “Sometimes you just need a font that can do the heavy lifting for you” is what a reviewer called Bethany Heck said in her review regarding Domaine.

In this research I found that Domaine is outspoken and professional, the font has many sides to it, Domain Display, Display Narrow, Display Condensed, and Text; this typeface has an elegance to it that demands attention, and it gets it

TRAITS: SHARP/ ELEGANT/ TRADITIONAL/ PRETTY/ THICK/ DOMINANT/ FRESH/ EFFORTLESS

These are the traits that I would like to incorporate in the creation of my user persona

I modified it a little bit by changing the background to wine barrels, as Hardys is where Domaine commenced, I also added things such as age, where the typeface originates from, what would be its role, and more
